Can Salads Actually Provide You With An Awesome Meal?

Salads for the most part are a no-brainer when it comes to preparing a meal. That’s what most people think anyway. For some of you, lettuce, tomatoes and salad dressing warrant a complete meal. But what if you wanted to actually create a hearty meal that would satisfy the four food groups?

Salads Are Great But Can They Fill You Up?

When you’re looking for something filling and refreshing to eat, especially during the warmer months, what better thing to have than a salad. They are lighter on your stomach, hearty, when done right, and add lots of color to your bowl. No longer considered rabbit food, salads provide nourishment to your body. Your skin benefits greatly from eating the right foods. When a salad is that right food, you’ll see skin that's glowing and radiant. Salads would actually become part of your skin care regimen. Let’s take a look at how to build a salad that's filling, hearty and great tasting too.

Welcome to the Salad Formula

The salad formula was created to offer a way to build a nourishing salad. Grains, cooked veggies, raw veggies, fruit, leafy greens, protein, salad dressings and toppers. Sounds like a plan. Here's a list to help you get started. Overtime, you'll develop your own combinations. Have fun with it.
  • Grains would consist of brown rice, quinoa, spelt and wild rice.
  • Cooked veggies would be broccoli, cauliflower, green beans, brussels sprouts, mushrooms, onions, sweet potatoes and butternut squash. I like to include bell peppers also.
  • Raw veggies and fruits - apples, avocado, bell peppers, cucumbers, pears, tomatoes
  • Leafy Greens - baby kale, spinach, spring greens, green leaf lettuce
  • Proteins - beans, lentils, nuts, salmon, poultry, eggs
  • To Top it Off - dates, dried cranberries, fresh herbs, tortilla chips, raisins, pumpkin seeds, feta cheese, granola
  • Dressings - Miso ginger, greek, chipotle, balsamic vinaigrette.

Don’t Over Cook …

Instead of cooking your veggies, as in over steaming them, you might want to stir fry this bunch. Yes there is a difference in cooking and stir frying. Stir-frying is similar to sautéeing, but amplified. With stir-frying, the heat is higher and the action is faster. Once done, put them on top of romaine lettuce, with salad dressing and toppers …yum yum Now the fun begins. You’ve got the makings of some fun salads and salad combinations. Have at it! Let us know what you've come up with. That's it for this week. As always … Dedicated To Your Beauty, Juliette Samuel, Esthetician/Author/Publisher Nyraju Skin Care
